Contenido For centuries, ‘silbo gomero’ was passed down from generation to generation as another tool for living in the countryside.
Luckily, since 1999, it has been taught as a compulsory subject at schools on La Gomera and as an optional subject in the rest of the archipelago, which has allowed it to spread, to the extent that there are now 22,000 people who know how to whistle it correctly.
Invented by the first settlers in the Canary Islands, the guanches, it was also used on other islands in the archipelago, although it has only been preserved on La Gomera.
‘Silbo gomero’ is a language that was created to travel long distances.
In fact, a whistle can reach much further than a scream.
Whistles are, after all, the most intense noise a human can make with their body.
This language has survived for thousands of years, since the first settlers, and has lasted so long because it has evolved.
As it is the only whistled language in the world that is developed and spoken by many people, ‘silbo gomero’ was declared UNESCO Intangible World Heritage in 2009.
Among the reasons for this is its cultural value, as well as the work done by islanders to keep it alive and its usefulness as a communication system.
‘Silbo gomero’ is one of the most important components of La Gomera culture, where it is commonplace for there to be whistling exhibitions at traditional festivities, whether religious or not.

Silbo Gomero is a whistling language that developed on the island of La Gomera, one of Spain’s Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa.
The island is difficult to traverse due to its very steep hills and deep ravines.
La Gomera’s inhabitants, tired of yelling at each other, long ago invented a phonetic language based on whistling, and for centuries this form of communication worked very well.
Then came telephones, and the whistling language fell into disuse.
Saving Silbo Gomera became the goal of busuu.com, an online community for learning languages, which produced this video as part of a worldwide campaign.
Their efforts were successful.
Yesterday UNESCO declared the language to be an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Also making UNESCO’s list was the sultry music and moves of the Tango.
The two countries put their arguments aside in order to petition UNESCO for the special status, and they now stand to receive funding to safeguard the cultural tradition.
There were 76 designations made this year, and include the Chinese Dragon Boat festival, Aubusson tapestry-making in France, and the traditional Nigerian harvest festival know as the Ijele masquerade.

The whistled language of La Gomera Island in the Canaries, the Silbo Gomero, replicates the islanders’ habitual language (Castilian Spanish) with whistling.
Handed down over centuries from master to pupil, it is the only whistled language in the world that is fully developed and practised by a large community (more than 22,000 inhabitants).
The whistled language replaces each vowel or consonant with a whistling sound: two distinct whistles replace the five Spanish vowels, and there are four whistles for consonants.
The whistles can be distinguished according to pitch and whether they are interrupted or continuous.
With practice, whistlers can convey any message.
Some local variations even point to their origin.
To prevent it from disappearing like the other whistled languages of the Canary Islands, it is important to do more for its transmission and promote the Silbo Gomero as intangible cultural heritage cherished by the inhabitants of La Gomera and the Canary Islands as a whole.
Taught in schools since 1999, the Silbo Gomero is understood by almost all islanders and practised by the vast majority, particularly the elderly and the young.
It is also used during festivities and ceremonies, including religious occasions.
